A Jenna Update

Jenna, the pup formerly known as "Brit" is enjoying a wonderful life with Mike and Val and Aussie "brother" Tigger. Mike & Val contacted me a little late in the game, with all puppies having been spoken for ... or so I thought. As it turned out, we did have one little puppy available and Mike & Val were very interested in coming down to meet us. Having recently lost one of their two Aussies, there was room in their hearts for another. Something about this couple connected with me immediately. Not only with me, and with the puppy, but also with another puppy family, Annette & Dave from Edmonton, owners of Zoey. Don't things just always have a way of working out?

Val tells me, "This summer, Jenna enjoyed a family vacation in Salmon Arm with stopovers in Canmore on the way there and back. Jenna got to stay in a hotel on the way to Canmore and in a two-story chalet on the way back home. She had a great time in the mountains in Canmore and was very well behaved in strange surroundings. In Salmon Arm, we stayed in a cabin. Jenna and Tigger went swimming every day and got to go on long hikes. By the time evening rolled around, Jen was both tired and content. Over the summer, Jenna also did a few road trips to Micquelon Lake for swim time. She absolutely loves the water. After 2-3 hours running around playing in the lake, it’s lights out all the way home.

After her puppy obedience classes, Jenna completed another obedience class. We then decided to switch gears and signed her up for a groundwork agility class. She is doing marvellously in that as well; catches on to things very quickly. She is already signed up for the next level of agility - weave poles, here we come. Also in her near future is the next level of obedience.

Ms. Jenna had her big operation around her seven-month milestone. We were going to wait until she was eight months old but a few neighbourhood boy dogs started finding her sexy, so we decided to get it done, and Sept 10 was the big day. She came through it very well.

As was mentioned in your Zoey blog, Jenna and Zoey get together very regularly. The girls get along famously and never tire of each other. We’ve come to the conclusion that only Aussie-on-Aussie playtime will adequately tire out the girls. I’ve found that other breeds can’t handle that Aussie enthusiasm quite the same way. It’s soooo much fun to watch Zoey and Jenna together. They take such joy in each other, running, wrestling, having fun. Unfortunately their recuperation period is shortening; it used to be after a playdate, Zoey and Jenna would be tuckered out for a day; now it’s a couple hours of nap time and they’re good to go again. We got together this past Saturday morning because Jenna needed some “Zoey time” and also as Zoey’s “supplier” I had a delivery for her (see *Note below), so we went for a walk in the river valley. The girls had a hoot as usual, running up and down the trails, up and down the ravine, lots of hillwork today, lots of bush-whacking. Zoey went for a dip in a swamp; can you say "bath time". I felt bad for Dave & Annette but it was kinda funny (sorry, guys). Sunday morning karma got me back. Jenna and Cinder (a two-year old black lab neighbour) went into the river for an unauthorized swim, or should I say three swims... so it was bath time for Jenna.
*Note: I found a place at the Strathcona farmers’ market that sells nice, meaty bones so I go there almost weekly to pick up the pups some bones.

Then there’s the jumping .... She’s so excited to see people she knows and she’s always jumping on them. When I come home from work, she is so excited that she just won’t stop jumping up on me, no matter what I do; knee, “be a tree”, crossed hands in front of her with a “no jumping, Jenna”, etc. So now, I quickly direct her from the back yard into the house and that minimizes the jumping and gives her some time to settle down before I get into the house. The one aspect of her “jumping” that we do enjoy are her pounces. OMG, they are sooo cute, we have to capture it on video. I can’t describe it to do it justice but I never get tired of watching her do it. There was one time when I was on the phone with Annette and I decided to put her on speakerphone. Jenna was right there, heard Annette’s voice and started the Aussie tilt-the-head from side-to-side. Annette then started talking to her, so we put the phone down on the sofa for Jenna to listen to. Jenna did a little squeak, jumped up on the sofa, pounced at the phone with both front paws and then started digging at the cushion, trying to “uproot” Auntie Annette; Jenna couldn’t figure out how Auntie was hiding under that darn sofa cushion. Jenna would stop for a sec, Annette would say something again, and Jenna would pounce and claw away. Man, I wish we had that on video.

In closing, I just want to say Michael & I are forever thankful that we ran across your website and were given an opportunity to be the parents of one of your lovingly raised puppies. Jenna is such a delight. She’s funny, athletic, very bright, cuddly, very playful, a go-getter, sassy, and to-die-for cute."

Kind of makes you wish all the doggies of the world could be so lucky!

Jenna & Tigger with Santa, of course

Happy Trails ... Theresa
