The scale of my life is all tipped toward puppies and lambs this week. Very little "real" work actually being done. Oh well, I'll make up for it sooner or later.
The puppies are 3 weeks old today, and the "old" puppies, Aspen and Will, along with their 6 siblings turn a year old today, July 7. With the little ones becoming so active, toddling about the whelping box with eyes open, it's quite a challenge to stay tied to the computer when there are puppies that need snuggling!
We had plans to head to Regina for the weekend for an ASCA show, but Aspen sustained a bit of a soft tissue/MSK injury to a front leg, paw, or ankle and is favoring it. Doesn't make for a pretty little show girl when she's got a slight limp. Cancelled the hotel and made the decision to stay home. Instead, I'll be able to go with Glenn as we enjoy our annual trek to the Calgary Stampede to take in the World Championship 6-Horse Hitch, as well as a corn dog or 2 and most certainly some mini donuts!
The last of our ewes finally delivered a week ago. We've had a nice break of about 3 weeks from the initial onslaught of new babies, until this last set of twins. Unfortunately, due to a very difficult breech delivery Mom didn't make it and we lost her the next morning, leaving behind 2 little orphan boys, now dubbed Eugene and Francis. She never did stand up again during labor or post delivery and the boys never nursed off Mom. We were able to get them colostrum but whether they got enough or got it in time, the next week or so will tell ... they'll either thrive and survive or wake up dead. Bottle-feeding around the clock is certainly not as much fun as you'd imagine it to be :) I had Belle out with me yesterday when I fed them. They obviously smelled milk on her and chased her around the yard for a while. She was very unimpressed.
Back to the babies ... the puppy babies. They're gorgeous. Beautiful heads and lovely color and markings. Naturally, I'm in love with the little red merle girl, I now call Prim. She'll be registered as Casselcreek Prim And Proper, and I'm hoping a name like this will provide me with some kind of guarantee that she'll grow into a composed, well-mannered little lady.
But, as always, I am so drawn to black tri puppies, and I love the boy. He's a beautiful puppy, already quite a character, very active, very expressive. Can't seem to leave him alone, but NO MORE BOYS FOR ME.
The red merle boy, Scotch or Scotty, is drumming up a lot of interest, so I'm hopeful he'll find his way to an active show home.
Blue merle girl is a lovely little thing, who frequently finds herself on my lap.
Happy Trails ... Theresa
